New Year's Resolutions

I am writing these today, because tomorrow looks awfully busy. I was never big on writing them down, but last year I wrote them downd and it is kind of fun to go back and see what you did.
Last year some of the goals I met were:

1. To get my weight to 180 or less and keep it there (Accomplished)
2. Go to Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium (Accomplished)
3. Read through the Bible (still in Isaiah, but that is not a bad thing)
4. Write Letters (I did this once, and the recipients were very appreciative)
5. Be less analytical and more relational (I will need to add that to this years list)

My goals for 2009 shall be as follows:

1. Go on a mission trip. I need to do this to determine if that tug in my heart I feel is a calling of just something that I am interested in, it is well past time that I made this decision. Whatever i decide, I am going to make that decision and have no regrets about it either way.

2. Run 1,000 miles for the year (I will need to average about 19.23 per week)

3. Complete the Bible Reading, but complete it in a meaningful way and not just to say I have completed it.

4. Avoid Isolation (This might be big for me, because it is very possible that I am going to live alone soon, and I tend toward this, and I know it is not a good thing, so I need to work on avoiding it. Spending time alone is not bad, doing a lot of it is.)

5. Again, I have to work on being relational with people, not analytical. Perhaps, one day I will figure this out.

6. Read many good books, I am most excited about Heaven by Randy Alcorn.

7. There are others but they are for me to know and you will have to ask if you want to know.

Dallas Cowboys

I HATE the DALLAS COWBOYS. Well, not really but they sure are frustrating. They are the Yankees of football, sign a bunch of superstar primadonna's and have nothing to show for it. That being said, I don't think things are as bleak as they are being made out to be. I am reminded of the old saying: "It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth". So before everybody loses their football mind let me lay out the plan of sucess for the 2009 Dallas Cowboys.

1. Good Bye T.O. I don't care about his antics or anything, I care that he drops the football as much or more than anyone in the NFL. Also, he is the team leader and that is a big part of the problem. Attitude reflects leadership is a quote from Remember the Titans and it seems pertinent here.

2. We must upgrade the defensive backfield. This will not be proposed anywhere but here, but I think T. Newman needs to be moved to safety and let the young guys start playing CB. I mean Jenkins and Scandrick, I am not sure Pac Man Jones will not be locked up or suspended, so just like T.O. you dont need a guy you can count on, doesnt matter if it is on or off the field, you don't need guys who are not dependable.

3. The left side of the offensive line must be upgraded. This should be taken care of by the healthy return of Kyle Kosier and Montrae Holland. I know the offense and the offensive coaches took a lot of heat, but it sure is easier to play offense if you have guys who can block. Cory Procter should be demoted to the Arena Football League, no team would win with him at left guard. Also, remember we should have the return of Felix Jones an Marion Barber III at full strength.

4. This is the most important, these boys need an attitude adjustment. They have no concept of how a team works. Every single one of them needs to shut up and go play football. It doesnt matter who gets the football or how often anyone gets the football, it only matters that the team you are on wins. This is one of the most talented group of indiviudals, but they have no concept of team. Unfortunately, this is a team sport, and the teams that accept that no individual is greater than the sum parts are the teams that win.

5. Leave all of the coaches in place for one more season. If you change the coaches that will just cause more disarray.

Anyway, it is baseball season now........don't get me started on the Rangers.

Uprising

Pardon my writing, but I will probably have 3 blogs for the evening.

I just finished reading a book, it is called "Uprising" by Erwin McManus. Honestly, the 1st part of the book was kind of dragging along, but the last part of the book pierced me as no other book has before. *Obviously, this does not include the word of the living God, which is sharper than any two edged sword, and pierces me over and over again.

He said, "God's goal is not that we become affluent, but that we become generous" amen to that.
That is very contrary to what a lot of christian TV teaches and/or preaches.

This was the most moving part of the book to me, the one that caused the deepest reflection and some sincere introspection:
"Love requires trust and trust always requires risk. He knows we will never fully experience love unless we give all of ourselves away"

This was very difficult for me to read, because I have a very difficult time trusiting anyone. The reasons for this are many, and some may be considered valid....if I were not a Christian. It seems to me that I have a tendency to trust people until they let me down 1 time, and then that is all I can trust them. Of course, this seems extradonarily arrogant. That might be okay, if I didn't let people down, but I do, as we all do, turns out there is only one perfect person and he happened to be God incarnate. I am glad I read the book until the end even though I was not enjoying the 1st part, for it has convicted me and hopefully it will help me grow into a more trusting relationship with God and all of the people I know.

Christmas

It is the holiday season and I would like to share my thoughts on Christmas. I am not really a big fan of Christmas. Well, the way it is celebrated in America. This is the celebration of the most important day in history, and that is often overlooked because we are busy asking Kids what they want from Santa Claus. Please read to the end of this entry and you will find what I believe is the most appropriate question on December 25th, and possibly any day of any year.
I do want to share the following,

"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this."

The above is what Christmas is all about. It is about God becoming a man. God became a man, lived a sinless life, yet died a sinners death. In fact, the penalty for all sin for all time was poured out on him on a cross. This fact has never escaped me, or made sense to me. He who did no wrong, paid the penalty for all wrong ever done!!!!!!

So, instead of thinking of the gifts you are giving and receiving, be reminded of the greatest gift ever given. It was a baby in a manger, a creator among the created, a savior among the sinners.
There has never been one like him, nor will there ever be. If you think no one cares about you, there is one who cares so much, that he came to earth and died on a cross, just for you. He would have done that just for you or just for me. For me, I say so long Santa Claus, you are over rated, and hello Immanuel or God with us, the one who will bring peace on earth and to all men!!!!!!

This Christmas, I would encourage you to thoughtfully consider the following. It is the season of gift giving, ask yourself the following: What will you bring as a gift to the Lord Jesus? He wants your life. Will you give it to Him? All of it, it is really and truly the only thing on earth that is worth living for.....One of my favorite people to read about said something along these lines......"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose"

Merry CHRISTmas

November 25th

Was a great day because my favorite artist released a new CD.
That would be Jeremy Camp in case you are wondering.
If you don't know who he is, check him and his story out.
I have to give this CD props because normally I don't like anything at first but the song "Surrender" is one of my favorite songs of all time already.

Give Thanks

It is November, so Thanksgiving is on my mind. With that in mind, I present the following:

Psalm 118:1

118:1
O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: because his mercy [endureth] for ever.

Although I often do not enjoy my job, Thank you that I have a job.
Thank you for wonderful days that have perfect weather, and places to sit outside and eat and enjoy the weather.
Thank you for my church, and a pastor that preaches the Word.
Thank you for my friends who mean a lot to me, even if i do not let them know near enough.
Thank you for never giving up on me, even if I give up on you.
Thank you for baseball.
Thank you for books.
Thank you for chocolate chip cookies.
Thank you for music.
Thank you for letting me learn that there is nothing more important in life than learning you will never leave me or forsake me.

Thank you for winter, it makes me appreciate the summer even more.
Thank you for sports and people to play them with.
Thank you for answering prayers, and thank you for the prayers I am still waiting to be answered.
Thank you for online sermons and the access to hear the word at any time.

Thank you for my nieces and nephews.
Thank you for a peace that passes understanding and can only come from knowing you.
Thank you that when I was ready to give up on my faith, the right people came along.
Thank you for Nehemiah 9, that is a great reminder of the faithful God, even if I am not faithful.
Thank you for humorous TV shows that make us laugh.
Thank you that Philipians reminds me that since you have started a good work in me, and since you started that work, you will not stop until it is complete.
Thank you for vacations.
Thank you for leaving the 99 and searching for the 1, for we are all the 1 at sometimes.

Who will save us?

Monday, November 10th

The election is finally over!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Regardless of what side you are for, you have to be relieved that this election season has finally ended. There are some people who say that our country is in a lot of trouble. The same people are counting on president elect Barack Obama to save us. There are others who hoped that John McCain would save us. I think we all need to take a moment and realize neither man can save the country. Will President Obama solve all of our problems? Assuredly, he will not. Would John Mccain solve all of our problems? Assuredly, he would not. The problem is not presidential. The problem is spiritual. Some suggest that one or the other would do a better job leading America according to Biblical principles. I do not see a lot from either that would give me great comfort that either man is a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. One claims to be a Christian, the other a Christian, but not the born again type (that is the only type of Christian).

All of this reminds me of the following:

speaking of Jesus in Acts 4

v 12: "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

I know that in context this is speaking of our eternal salvation, but lets apply it to our lives in the here and now.

No politician can save us, only the name of the Living God, whose name is Jesus, can save us.
Christians, lets all work to be concerned with the proclamation about Jesus and who he is, than with pointing out all that is wrong with the current leaders.

Cravings by McManus

"We are born to belong, we are created for connection, and whether we admit it to ourselves or not, we spend our whole lives trying to fit in, get in, and stay in. It almost doesn't even matter what "in" is; we just want to belong somewhere."
--Erwin McManus Entry 14 in his book Cravings

Isn't it odd when you are reading a book and it just somehow applies to your life?

Republican or Democrat

Well, it is almost election time and I am going to weigh in. I am very interested in politics, but due to the people who are really involved in the politics, my interest is waning. If you are wanting to know what candidate I think is best, well don't ask me. I don't think either of the candidates are great. Here is what gets me about politics, why must everyone be so hateful and lose all objectivity when it comes to this matter? I have friends who are republicans and they will send me the 238 lies and contradictions of B. Obama. I have friends who are democrats and they will usually follow up with the 239 lies of McCain. Is there anyone out there who will just present the case for what they stand for. I am really not as interested in how much you hate the other candidate as I am in what you stand for. Also, as a Christian, I do not think that just because someone is a Christian that will make them a good politician. Anyway, I wish politics was a much more agreeable presentation of ideas. I would really enjoy a debate of ideas and why one person is for each idea, but I can not stand the mandate to make the other person look like an idiot......

Texas Rangers

I am about to convince you why the Texas Rangers will win the World Series. This may be the longest blog I will write. I am doing it now because my baseballe excitement is winding down as the football season kicks into gear. I have been a long suffering Ranger fan since I was old enough to know what baseball was. I am such a baseball fan that when I was young I used to fake stomach aches so I could stay home and watch the Cubs or Braves. Now, as an adult my 3 most recent vacations were centered around seeing baseball games. You might say I am a fanatic (fan for short). Well, if you know anything about baseball, you know that the Texas Rangers do not have a storied history. They have been playing Major League Baseball in Arlington, Tx since 1972 (allegedly). I was born in 1978 and shortly thereafter I became a Ranger fan. I have no idea why this is, but I just loved baseball for as long as I can remember. I can play catch or home run derby for hours and hours (Yes, that is pathetic, but that is the way it is). The Rangers have treated me to exactly one Playoff win. Now, if you are a baseball fan you know that it takes at minimum 3 to win a playoff series. The Rangers are 1-9 in playoff games, all against the stupid Yankees. Well, many local fans have turned their allegiance to other teams or just give up hope on the lowly rangers. Not me, I will never give up on this team. Each year, about this time I get very dissapointed and say I will probably not watch as much next year, but as soon as the opening day tickets go on sale I will be giving my money to this team who has brought me nothing in return. Why, you may ask? I guess Baseball is my drug and I am truly addicted.

Here is why the Rangers will win the World Series in the Next 10 years.
1. They finally have a plan and seem to be sticking to it. We need more pitching has been the motto of the Rangers since their inception. Usually, if we have a good pitcher we give him to another team for free. The following names are former Rangers....Chris Young, Edinson Volquez, John Danks, Aaron Harang, Justin Durchsherer, Armando Galaraga and I am sure there are more but that is off the top of my head. All of these guys are having tremendous seasons as pitchers, but not for my beloved Texas Rangers.

I think they have finally started to develop some pitchers and hope they can keep them.
I think we have a championship rotation in the Minors if they are allowed to develop. Remember the following names:

1. Neftali Feliz (thank you Mark Teixera and the Braves)
2. Derek Holland
--If you want to get excited go to Milb.com and look at the numbers of these 2 guys, they are coming and they are my 2 favorite prospects. Of course, I thought Juan Dominguez had something too and you probably don't remember him.

Those are two guys with ace potential, but the real reason for optimism is the following list

1. Eric Hurley
2. Matt Harrison
3. Michael Main
4. Blake Beavan
5. Tommy Hunter
6. Neil Ramirez
7. Kasey Kiker
8. Brandon McCarthy (maybe, I am losing interest quickly)
9. Carlos Pimentel (he is several years away.

These guys are all pitchers and we need to have 5 good ones. I know I am missing a few, but the more you run out there the better your odds of finding one.

I think the Pitching is coming but soon we will see.

Now, we need to get to the rest of the team. The following is the lineup I think may get us there

1. Julio Borbon CF
2. Michael Young 3b
3. Josh Hamilton RF
4. Ian Kinsler 2B
5. Chris Davis/Justin Smoak 1B (One will be traded for Pitching)
6. Max Ramirez DH
7. Boggs/Murphy LF Platoon
8. Taylor Teagarden C
9. Elvis Andrus SS

UIF Jose Vallejo
4th Of TBD

Now this leaves out the bullpen, but that will work itself out.
Will the Rangers ever win the Series? Yes, at least that is what i tell myself every March.

Not so Serious

Its Friday, so i thought i would do a little writing that is on the lighther side. One of my favorite things to do is make lists, so I am going to introduce my first Blog list (There will be many to come)

5 things I look for in a girl:

1. Must be able to make chocolate chip cookies (This was on my real list until the store invented those ready to bake cookies)
2. No Smoking (No exceptions)
3. No kids (There is an exception)
4. No fat chicks (the determination is you can not weigh more than me)
5. Sarcasm (Absolutely, no exceptions)

This is only for humor purposes, if you are offended you shouldn't be, because these are really just jokes.

Passion and Calling

The dictionary defines passion as the following:
intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction

This is something I think about often. I think if you asked most people who knew me what I am passin is, they would say sports. Specifically, they would say football or baseball. I would argue that yes I am passionate about those, they are not my soul stirring passion.

As a christian, I have often heard that if you are passionate about something then you should pursue that as your career. I am working in my own mind to determine if that is accurate and this poses a couple of problems.

First, as Christians I believe we are all to be passionate about Jesus Christ and letting people know what he has done for us. This is hard for me sometimes, because at this current juncuture I do not enjoy my job one bit. Each day I look forward to the day when I am doing something I feel "called" to do. Eventually, I will end up working in the public school system, but I have to make it through 5 years at my current employer. I am 4/5ths of the way done, but I am having trouble thinking I can make it through the final year. Every morning, when I wake up, I have been trying to think of it this way. If my passion is Jesus as it should be, then each day when I go to work, I should be his representative to my job. Then I wonder how am I doing at that, and most of the time I think.....I can not be doing a very good job. When you don't enjoy your job it is hard not to complain about your job. When you don't really want to be at work, it is difficult to do a good job. The thing is I have a God who came and died for me. I don't think he could have been having a great time as he was being nailed to a cross, but at that time that is exactly where he needed to be. Also, I know he did not want to be there because he asked his Father to take the cup from his hand, but that the Father's will be done. This is a hard prayer to pray, but I must if Jesus did. I don't want to be here right now, but if its your will I am thankful to be in your will because I know you care for me. I look forward to the day when I am in a place that is more enjoyabe, such as when Jesus ended up on the right hand of the Father.

My next and final question is: What if your other passions are not vocational? If there is one thing that keeps me awake at night, it is family. If you are reading this, you may or may not know the story of my family. Let me just say it is not ideal. Almost every book I read is how to be a man, and how to treat your family, and sometimes all I can think about is if God gives me a wife how will I treat her. Will I treat her in the way I have been instructed through the scriptures, or will I revert to what was modeled to me through my family. Pshycology will tell me that I will revert back to my roots. I contend that with the help of God, and only with his help I can build a family that his honoring to him and brings glory to him, but only through Him!
I have an idea how to do it. I think if God gives me a young lady to call my wife, if I spend every day for the rest of my life making her feel like the most special and beautiful girl in the world, that is a good start. Now, if I can just convince a girl to let me do that (Good luck to me). For kids, I am certain that if you raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord they will not depart from it. The question then is this? How do I work this into my life calling, or can I. Is it possible, that I need to go to work each day and be thankful for what God give me, or am I missing something he is asking me to do?

In conclusion, we shold be passionate about Jesus and I need to work on that a ton. Also, sometimes your passion may not be vocational, but that is okay, pursue it with all that is in you, trust the Lord and he will come through. He may not come through when you want him to, but in his time He will.

New York

Allright, so I am back from New York. It was the 1st time I had been to the state, much less the city. The sole purpose of this trip was to see Yankee stadium before it was shut down and replaced with the new one. This is the outside of the new one.

This was a trip that was planned just a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, I have a friend who now lives about an hour away from the city and offered to let me and 2 friends stay there. We flew up on Thursday and got in about lunch time. After lunch in a New York town, we headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame. This is an amazing experience and this place is out in the middle of nowhere. Actually, you go to the middle of nowhere and then go about a hour more into nowhere and there it is Cooperstown.

That is the entrance to the Hall of Fame, we had to go through quickly, but if you are a baseball fan you have to at least go there once.

Here is the Ranger representation, the guy on the plaque, not the goofball standing next to it:

The following is the 1st class and on of my favorite displays:

If you ever see that hat in the display on the right, you let me know so I can buy it. If you get me that hat you will be one of my favorite people.

Now, for the game. Our friend told us that if we came up there we could stay with his family for free, but that he would also get us tickets. Well, let me tell you about these tickets!!!! We were expecting that we might sit in the upper deck, but after talking to him maybe a little better than that. Well, when we got the tickets......Let the picture do the talking:

I have many more pictures but that is enough for now.

NEW YORK

This is how close I was sitting at Yankee stadium. More to come later

Girls

This is a continuation of the priror blog. I will try to keep it short, but most likely I will fail.
Girls: I am about to give you advice from a guys perspective on what a girl should be looking for in a guy. I know how much you all like unsolicited advice. (Please read prior sentence with its intended sarcasm). I think it must be extremely difficult for you ladies now to search for a man, because there are not many men walking around. We as guys must do a better job of growing up to be men and not being boys into our 20's, 30's, 40's and you get the idea. What I am writing will be my opinion, feel free to disagree. (Again, this is written from the perspective of a Christian)

The 1st thing you should be looking for in a guy, is a guy who is passionately in love with Jesus Christ. This is of utmost importance for a number of reasons. If a guy can not submit to his Lord, he will not be able to lead anyone in the appropriate manner. Second, if this is not the case he will not understand what a right relationship is. Third, if this is not the case, a guy is most likely going to have only is self interest at heart. If this guy does not know Christ, he has no reason to seek any interest other than his own. I think this 1st thing is obvious, but I am not sure it is often something that is considered as it should be.

Now that we have stated the obvious, lets move on to some more difficult things. The next thing I would say is, only consider a guy if he is willing to pursue you. If you are girl and you are reading this, take the following to heart. There is a man who pursued you like no one has ever pursued you. In fact, he wanted a relationship with you so much that he died for it. This man's name is Jesus. Now, if a guy is going to imitate that he will be willing to pursue it with all that he has and all that he is.

Third, find a guy who is building you up, but in a way that is making you feel like you are complete with Christ and not complete because of him. This is a little touchy because the Hebrew text of Genesis does somewhat indicate that a spouse is the completion of the other, kind of feels in what is missing. Girls, you should all know that you are each unique and amazing in your own way, the way that God created you, and you do not need any boy to make you who you are. Now, that being said, find a guy who makes you feel like who you are.

Finally, this is not really finally, but for the sake of brevity I will make it the final point.
Find a guy who you can and will be best friends with. I can see why this may not make sense, but at the end of the day this is very important. I have never understood and will never understand why girls are not seeking that in a guy. If a relationship ends up working out, you are going to spend a lot of time with that person. It only makes sense that would be someone who would be your best friend (Please reference the Faith Hill and Tim Mcgraw song)

*These are my thoughts. Of course, I know nothing about girls, except that they confuse me.
Please correct anything that is inaccurate.

"The One"

Over the next few days I will be addressing issues that are of great concern to me. Hopefully, they are controversial and somewhat thought provoking. If not, oh well it is just a blog.

Over the Next Few Days I will address the Following

1. Guys and Girls (That Shoud be fun)
2. Passion and Calling are they Equal?
3. Are all Christians Republicans and should they be? (No!!!)
4. Church in America, is it Christian?
5. Will The Texas Rangers ever win the World Series (I have a reputation to uphold)

Blog #1 may be lengthy and needs this * for any readers. Anything said in this blog is spoken as a generality. THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANY ONE PERSON, THIS IS BASED ON OBSERVATION AMONGST GUYS AND GIRLS AND ON MUCH STUDY OF THE SUBJECT.

Here it goes:

To begin I think I need to establish some perspective. This is written from the perspective of a Christian, i will expound on that in a later blog. If you do not know Christ this blog will not make sense to you and may seem ridiculous. Feel free to read and comment, I always appreciate the thoughts of those who may disagree with me.

I don't think it is any secret that in America there is a great epidemic. That epedimic is a thing called divorce. One of the really sad things is that among born again believers the divorce rate is just as high if not higher than that of non-christians. Personally, I am of the persuasion that this is due to a foundational problem in how guys and girls relate to each other prior to being married and how they select their mate.

I am single, as are most of my friends that I spend a lot of time with. One thing that we often talk about is finding "The One". This bothers me a little bit, because I believe it is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing. I think all of us have our list of what "The One" looks like, acts like, thinks like and etc... Well, most likely this person that we have dreamed up in our imagination does not exist. When marriage was first introduced it was introduced like this, "They two shall become one." Here is how we have it backwards, we are looking for "The One", when reality is that when we get married we should then be working toward becoming "The One" for each other. If you and I are looking for someone who is going to be "The One" we will never find them. This is a life long process of building a relationship that each person is helping the other grow closer to God, and in the benefit is that you grow closer to each other.

There is a remedy to this. This is probably going to be contrary to what most people believe, but stay with me. If this epedimic is to be cured, the foundation needs to be replaced. The foundation needs to be as follows. Guys and Girls need to build relationships through appropriate friendsips that turn into marital relationships. I would like to break this up into 2 categories. One will be direction for us guys, and one for you ladies.

Guys: This is of utmost importance. DO NOT PLAY WITH A GIRLS HEART!!!!!!! If you are not interested in a girl, don't do anything to make her think that you are. If you are, do everything to make her think that you are. Now, I know this is not as easy as it seems, but if you are doing that you are nothing more than an overgrown teenager and you are not a Man. Here is what is really important, Guys if you are working on a relationship with a girl, please build it in such a way that if either of you decide that you need to "break up" it is done in a cordial way. If you are an adult Man, you should be able to pursue a young lady and if it doesn't work out, you should still be able to be friends with the girl. The question arises, How do you do this? Well, it is going to come down to who's interest are you looking out for. If your relationship is all about making her think how awesome and great you are, then when you "break up" there will be bitterness. If your relationship is built on making her feel like she should in Christ, and one or both of you just determine that its not meant to be, then you should be able to have a relationship after. Guys, we should never be making a girl feel like she can't live without us, we should be about the business of making feel like they are daughters of a King. A king who gave his very life just so he could be with us. There is a lesson there but I will let you figure that out on your on.
